Marrying Survivorship Universal Life with a Fixed Indexed Annuity such as ATHOS

The Big Idea

Two Strategies. Two Jobs. One Coordinated Retirement Plan.

ATHOS FIA = Protected Retirement Asset

Position a suitable portion of long-term money for principal protection from negative index performance plus index-linked accumulation potential.

Survivorship UL = Legacy Asset

One policy insures two lives and generally pays after the second death, creating a dedicated benefit for heirs, trusts or estate objectives.

Don't Force One Product to Do Everything

Separate growth, liquidity, protection, income and legacy into intentional planning buckets.

The Provest Philosophy

Don't make every dollar do the same job. Give every dollar a purpose.

Protect retirement today + protect the family legacy tomorrow

Bucket #1

ATHOS — Protected Accumulation + Built-In Control

Principal Protection

Negative index performance does not by itself create a negative indexed-interest credit; withdrawals and contract provisions still matter.

Index-Linked Opportunity

Interest can be linked to eligible indexes without directly owning the underlying securities.

Reset or Extend

ATHOS allows eligible indexed accounts to Reset or Extend, subject to current contract terms and rates.

Tax Deferral

Interest generally compounds tax-deferred until distributed; taxable gains are generally ordinary income.

Illustrative only — not actual ATHOS performance. Nassau states that on Extend, 90% of the highest Daily Account Value as of each contract anniversary during the segment is protected.

Best role: long-term protected accumulation

Bucket #2

Survivorship Universal Life — The Legacy Component

Two Lives. One Policy.

Survivorship life generally pays after the second insured dies, making it especially useful for multigenerational and estate planning.

Create a Defined Legacy

Instead of hoping a portfolio has a certain amount left over, the couple can intentionally fund a death-benefit objective.

Generally Income-Tax-Free Death Benefit

Under current federal rules, life-insurance death proceeds are generally excluded from the beneficiary's gross income, subject to exceptions.

Potential Cash-Value Access

Certain SUL/IUL designs may build cash value accessible through withdrawals and policy loans when properly structured.

Important

Not automatic “tax-free income.” Basis, MEC status, policy performance, loan interest, withdrawals and lapse risk determine whether access remains tax-advantaged.

The Connection

Fund the Legacy Separately — Then Design Retirement for Retirement

Step 1

Define the Legacy

What should children, grandchildren, charities or trusts ultimately receive?

Step 2

Build the Legacy Bucket

Evaluate whether a properly structured SUL can fund some or all of that future objective.

Step 3

Segment Retirement Assets

Separate growth, liquidity, market protected accumulation and retirement income.

The legacy no longer has to depend entirely on what is left in the portfolio.

That can change the retirement conversation from:

“How much do we have to preserve?”
To
“How much can we responsibly use to live the retirement we built?”

Permission to Spend

A Powerful Retirement Planning Conversation

“We have built $3 million — but we're afraid to spend it because we want to leave $2 million to our children.”

SUL — Define the Inheritance

Evaluate creating the intended legacy through life insurance rather than requiring the investment portfolio alone to preserve it.

ATHOS — Protect Appropriate Long-Term Dollars

Create a protected-accumulation bucket for suitable retirement assets.

Investments — Keep Growth Working

Maintain appropriate assets for long-term appreciation, liquidity and inflation exposure.

Retirement — Use the Plan for Life

Evaluate how much the couple can responsibly enjoy, distribute or convert to income once the legacy has its own strategy.

Tax Character

Market Assets

Tax treatment depends on contract structure, account type and individual circumstances. Coordinate with tax and legal professionals.

Income vs. Accumulation

Do Not Confuse Protected Growth with Guaranteed Lifetime Income

ATHOS Core Role

ATHOS is accumulation-focused. Its primary story is protected, index-linked accumulation — not automatically a lifetime-income rider.

Guaranteed Lifetime Income

Annuities can be structured to provide lifetime income through annuitization or specific guaranteed-income features/products, subject to contract terms.

SUL / IUL Role

Life insurance is primarily protection and legacy planning. Cash value may supplement retirement liquidity, but it is not the same as an annuity's contractual lifetime-income guarantee.

Accumulation ≠ Income Guarantee | Legacy ≠ Income Guarantee

Design Guardrails

What Must Be Tested Before Implementation

Liquidity First

Keep adequate emergency and near-term spending reserves outside surrender-charge products.

ATHOS Suitability

Confirm time horizon, state availability, current crediting choices, surrender schedule, free-withdrawal terms and MVA provisions.

SUL Funding + Underwriting

Stress-test illustrated and guaranteed values; underwriting and premium design materially affect results.

MEC + Policy Loan Risk

Excess funding can trigger MEC treatment; loans reduce values and may create taxation if a policy lapses or is surrendered with gain.

Ownership + Estate Design

Personal versus trust ownership can affect control, gifts and estate-tax outcomes.

Annual Review

Revisit annuity strategies, policy performance, beneficiaries, tax law, spending needs and family goals.

The Provest Positioning

Build Stronger. Live Better. Leave Something Greater.

Your retirement assets should fund your life.
Your legacy strategy should help fund what comes after it.
Growth. Liquidity. Protection. Income. Legacy.
Don't make every dollar do the same job. Give every dollar a purpose.
